Home is where the (Lion) Heart is - TheMoveChannel.com

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 28, 2009 ) If you are hunting for a home with the wow factor, it doesn’t get much more wow than living in Richard the Lionheart’s castle – the beautiful French chateau complete with medieval tavern has just come onto the market and is laying claim to being the King’s final resting place…

A home fit for a King, (literally) the medieval French Chateau is set in 500 acres of landscaped grounds and chestnut forests on the border of the Dordogne region.

Dating back to 1179 when the region was part of English Aquitaine ruled by the Plantaganets under the King, the Chateau remained remained at the centre of the struggle between England and France and played a part in the Hundred Years War during the 14th Century.

Its biggest claim to fame is the link to Richard, who was known as Richard the Lionheart even before he became King of England in 1189, because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior.

Spending most of his reign in France despite his job title, Richard met his fate whilst laying siege to a castle near to the Chateau in 1199, and local legend has it that he was laid to rest in the ChateauÂ’s grounds.

Now, this slice of (albeit not confirmed) history is on the market and what a slice it is.

Completely restored to offer all modern comforts against a medieval backdrop, the Chateau boasts six individual houses, five lakes, a golf course, chapel, concert hall and working tavern so the new owners certainly will be living like royalty.

If you fancy having a few friends over for dinner, access is easy – the Chateau lies 30 minutes from Limoges International Airport and seating won’t be a problem - the Great Knight’s Hall seats 100 people, so the more the merrier.

Amongst the famous guests who have already enjoyed dinner at the Chateau include Madame Pompadour and President de Gaulle.

Nikki Baer, Managing Director of French Property Specialists Cabinet de l'Unicorne told TheMoveChannel.com, “The Chateau was restored at considerable expense to retain its medieval character.

“The artisans used were all master craftsmen specifically skilled in the careful restoration of ancient castles of this type.

“At the same time it was carefully developed to provide luxurious and modern comfort – the 17 bedrooms are all en-suite.

“A cinema has also been cleverly installed whilst retaining the fabulous vaulted ceilings,” added Ms Baer.

And now the big question – what price can be put on history? Well, I’ll tell you. To take up your reign as Richard’s successor, you will need to dig deep – the Chateau has an asking price of £23.2 million.

If thatÂ’s a little out of your price range, donÂ’t despair, the sellers have thrown in a 30 piece dinner service to sweeten the deal.
