‘Tourism of doom’ – seeing earth’s natural wonders before it’s too late - TheMoveChannel.com

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 13, 2009 ) The tourist market has coined a new buzz phrase, ‘tourism of doom,’ which describes the emerging trend of travellers heading to far flung corners of the world in a bid to see endangered natural wonders before it’s too late. TheMoveChannel.com checks out these disappearing hotspots…

From the tropics to the ice fields, doom is big business. The scary thing is – some of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders may not be around for the next generation to enjoy.

Global warming is one of the main culprits in causing natural wonders to vanish before our eyes, melting eyes, melting sparkling glaciers and killing coral and sea life.

In Alaska, the winter wonderland is slowly becoming a giant puddle with shrinking glaciers and melting permafrost and over in Antarctica, the Muller and the Larsen ice shelves are shrinking dramatically.

According to the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators, slightly more than 46,000 tourists visited the continent during the 2007-08 tourist season which was more than double the number five seasons ago.

About a third came from the United States, followed by visitors from the UK.

The year round snow at the summit of the breathtaking Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania has been slowly melting and as sea levels rise, Venice is sinking further into the Adriatic.

That string of iridescent pearls in the Indian ocean – the paradise islands of the Maldives - are destined to be under water within 100 years, cutting off the tourist cash that the local economy relies so heavily on.

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, flocking to some of the worldÂ’s best diving and stunning underwater marine life. But, it has been predicted that rising water temperatures will kill 95 per cent of the living coral by 2050.

Shrinking tropical rainforests are also a hot spot in this new ‘doomsday tourism,’ and one small town in north Canada has recorded a massive increase in visitor numbers, due to its claim to being the ‘Polar Bear Capital of the World.’

As the furry white giants lumber further towards extinction thanks to shrinking sea ice, tourists keen to spy one are heading to the odds on favourite town of Churchill.

Almost all these trips are marketed as environmentally aware and eco-sensitive - they are, after all, a tour of the devastating effects of global warming.

But eco gurus say that this kind of travel is actually making things worse, with the air and car journeys only contributing to the destruction of the very places these tourists of doom are trying to see.
