SUN VALLEY ERNEST HEMINGWAY FESTIVAL PARTNERS WITH COMMUNITY LIBRARY

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 09, 2009 ) New York, NY - The Sun Valley Ernest Hemingway Festival, held each fall to celebrate the life and works of the famous author who hunted and wrote on and off in Sun Valley/Ketchum, Idaho for twenty-two years, has partnered with the Community Library to create the newly named Ernest Hemingway Symposium, a two-day event that will be held October 22nd-23rd, 2009.

The Symposium will include lectures by Hemingway scholars Scott Donaldson and Dr. Susan Beegel, as well as a tour of popular Hemingway sites, a short-story contest, and museum displays. The events are free and open to the public, and will be held at the Community Library.

“We have changed the format of the Festival in order to concentrate more heavily on the literary works of Hemingway,” noted Carrie Westergard, Festival Director. “The partnership with the Community Library is a perfect fit.”

Complete biographies of speakers are below:

Scott Donaldson is one of the nation’s leading literary biographers. After beginning his career as a newspaper reporter and editor in Minneapolis, Donaldson taught at the College of William and Mary in Virginia for 26 years, retiring as a Louise G. T. Cooley Professor of English, Emeritus, in 1992. He was twice a Fulbright senior lecturer, in Finland and Italy, the Bruern Fellow at the University of Leeds in England, and a visiting fellow at Princeton. On two occasions he received major grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support his writing, as well as awards from the Rockefeller Foundation, the MacDowell Colony, the American Philosophical Society, and William and Mary. In 1999 he won the Monroe K. Spears Prize for “The Literary Situation Today,” chosen as best essay of the year in the Sewanee Review. In 2002 he won that journal’s Robert Heilman Prize for book reviewing. Donaldson has just completed work on his latest book Fitzgerald and Hemingway: Works and Days.

Susan F. Beegel holds a PhD in English literature from Yale University. For over a decade, she has edited the award-winning international journal, The Hemingway Review, a joint publication of the University of Idaho and The Hemingway Society. Beegel has published three books and more than fifty articles, book chapters, editions, and reviews about Ernest Hemingway and other figures in American literature and history. An experienced public speaker, she delivered the keynote address for the Hemingway Centennial Celebration in the author's birthplace of Oak Park, Illinois, and has appeared live on national television in C-Span's American Writers series. Beegel is a veteran of Idaho Public Television's "Dialogue" program, and her appearances in television documentaries include Diamond Sun Production’s, "Hemingway in the Autumn," and Harmony Gold's "Hemingway in Cuba.”

The Ernest Hemingway Festival Symposium is sponsored by the Sun Valley/Ketchum CVB and The Community Library. The event will take place at The Community Library in Ketchum. Complete information can be found by visiting www.ernesthemingwaysymposium.com

The Community Library is a unique non-profit organization providing free library services to the public.
