(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 23, 2011 ) MERLIN, ORE. -- The seasons are ready to change in Oregon. At MorrisonÂ’s Rogue River Lodge,that means more than falling temperatures and colorful leaves; the beginning of fall marks a major changes in the character of the river and its visitors.
The Rogue is a favorite among adrenaline junkies for its summer whitewater rafting season, but by September the river becomes a destination for the quieter sport of fly fishing. Anglers are drawn by the river’s Steelhead, which make their first runs in the early fall. The river is especially famous for its “half-pound” Steelhead: adolescents that return from the Pacific before they are fully grown. These young fish, along with the river’s strong Chinook runs, make the Rogue Oregon’s best river for salmon fishing.
Running Free
While the river is already famous for its salmon population, it promises to become an equally strong destination for trout fishermen in the coming years. Major dams, built decades ago to supply irrigation water to local farms, have recently come down. Those projects have left the Rogue running free for 157 miles, the longest it has gone unimpeded in 80 years.
That salmon will no longer die at the base of dams on their way upstream, and trout will be able to breed more successfully and grow larger.
So the Rouge, which was originally protected by the federal government as a Wild and Scenic River in 1968, is still one of the countryÂ’s healthiest, wildest rivers.
The Guides
MorrisonÂ’s Rogue River Lodge was founded in 1946 to cater exclusively to anglers. Though it has expanded some in the generations to come, fishing the Rogue is still at the heart of the lodgeÂ’s operations.
Visitors at the lodge can fish with a team of the most experienced guides in the Pacific Northwest. These men have been fishing the Rogue for decades, and know the river and its fish better than anyone.
Take Paul “Pablo” Blakely for example. Pablo started guiding full-time at Morrison’s in 1976, and has led trips on the Rogue every fall since. Pablo is just one of 10 guides a Morrison’s, and each of them has a passion for the sport, the river, and providing an excellent experience to the lodge’s guests.
They are willing to accommodate the most unskilled beginners by teaching basic skills like casting, but are also well-poised to help expert anglers bag the riverÂ’s biggest fish.
The Lodge
The river is the heart of the MorrisonÂ’s experience. But the icing on the cake is the lodge itself. Guests at MorrisonÂ’s enjoy luxury lodging in a rustic but comfortable setting right on the banks of the river. Family owned since it was founded, MorrisonÂ’s is a favorite for its ability to provide an intimate and authentic Rogue River experience.
Meals are eaten on the lodgeÂ’s expansive outdoor patio, which overlooks the river. The food is cooked on-site, and has been recognized twice by Bon Appetit Magazine for its recipes.
