(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 13, 2011 ) PORT ANGELES, Wash.- Across the country a new holiday tradition is taking hold. Christmas Bird Counts can be found from Port Angeles on WashingtonÂ’s Olympic Peninsula to Bar Harbor on MaineÂ’s Mount Desert Island. Bird counts arenÂ’t just for experienced birder; first-timers can join in the fun with instruction provided by the local chapters of the Audubon Society. The idea is to pick an area or route and count the birds you see using a local checklist. The information is given to the Audubon Society which tallies it all up and uses the information to protect bird species bird species and habitats. This is a great family event, getting everyone outside, working together, and possibly creating a bit of competition. While Christmas Bird Counts may be new to most of us, this is the 112th annual count.
Counts are held between December 14th and January 5th. Check with your local Audubon Society or other birding association to find out the exact date in your area.
