St MichaelÂ’s Mount History And Setting Makes A Memorable Holiday Says Hotel-Cornwall.com

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 17, 2012 ) Cornwall, UK -- Meaning ‘grey rock in the woods’, the Cornish for the beautiful St Michael’s Mount is Karrek Loes y’n Koes and the tidal island lies under 400 metres off the Mount’s Bay of Cornwall. United with the stunning town of Marazion by a man-made causeway of granite setts, the area is thought to have been a lively port for the tin trade during the prehistoric times.

A Cornish counterpart of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, during the 11th century St Michaels Mount history begins with the Benedictines’ religious order of Mont Saint Michel.

Today, the destination is known affectionately by locals simply as the Mount and it continues to attract hordes of visitors, both from the surrounding areas and from further afield.

Visitor access to the island is controlled by the National Trust (and is free to its members) and it is still owned by the St Aubyn family of Clowance. With its very own community, the island is often ruled by the climate and tides, but whatever the weather, people still flock in to see what this mesmerising part of the country has to offer.

As a busy port, the population of the island rose to around 300 at one point, but while motorboats come and go today, St Michael’s Mount’s cottages along the seafront accommodate more than 30 people who still live and work on the island. Despite this small population, there are a number of fine hotels near St Michaels Mount and the great thing about the island is that there is never a shortage of things to do. In fact, crossing the bay to the sea-bound castle has been dubbed ‘a mini adventure in itself’ by Stmichaelsmount.co.uk. Leave the mainland behind and slip on a pair of walking boots or jump on a boat to enjoy a history lesson like no other.

Take up the island's invitation to ‘walk in the footsteps of pilgrims’ and ‘hop aboard a boat and motor into the harbour’. Ensure one allow at least four hours in order to do the Mount Justice, but one won’t be at a loose end if one has more time on their hands, too.

No trip to St Michael’s Mount would be complete without visiting the church built on the summit of the island following its Norman invasion, which saw the area granted to the Benedictine Abbey of Monst St Michel. Discover the suits of armour from days gone by and explore the treasures of old passed through the generations by the island’s owners.

The preservation and conservation of the Mount is looked after by the St Aubyn family and offers a stunning stay in an absolutely breath-taking destination. For more information, please visit http://www.hotel-cornwall.com/hotels-in-st-micheals-mount/
