Costa Rican Capital Gets Its Own Chinatown reports The Springs Costa Rica

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, December 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Costa Rica has become a main tourist attraction for many, with lush rain forest scenery and climate that rarely varies from comfortable and pristine. Costa Rica is also one of the safest countries in the Central American region.

San Jose, the oft overlooked capital of the country, is hoping to find a way to draw more tourists to the metropolis with its construction of its very own Chinatown.

The city is being handed $1 million from the Chinese government directly, and is now looking to ad a 2,000-foot pedestrian street that is lined with Tang Dynasty-style archway, which is the staple of Chinatowns elsewhere. There will also be Chinese style shops, restaurants, and other alluring storefronts and entertainment areas. San Jose's mayor hopes that the area will become a new destination for those who decide to visit his beautiful country.

A local store owner is happy to see the renovation and addition to the city, saying, “It was definitely worth the wait. Many stores closed, and some of us are indebted, but the sales now reflect that the wait was definitely worth it.”

Construction for the area is set to begin in February, and many of the stores will be taking the place of stores which had suffered low sales. Those who are set to move into the area are optimistic that the new lure of a Chinatown will bring in plenty of new customers.

“It was definitely worth the wait. Many stores closed, and some of us are indebted, but the sales now reflect that the wait was definitely worth it,” said a storeowner, according to Inside Costa Rica.
San Jose's local government is sure that Chinatown will help boost interest in the area, and thus help prop up the economy.

“This type of investment definitely brings profit to all those who have properties (in the area), especially those that are in front of the boulevard on 9th street,” said Marco Vinicio Corrales, from the Municipality of San Jose.

With over 100 Chinatowns worldwide, the most famous are located within San Francisco. Costa Rica does boast a large Chinese demographic with a large immigrant population, especially within San Jose itself.
