(I-TravelNewswire.Com, February 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- When it comes to being given injections to fill out the wrinkles in one's face, or free muscles to reduce frown lines, anyone can employ action, and some are now thinking this ought to change, according to guidance.
Guidance also called for tighter restrictions on advertising to utilize only photos that are true-to-life, and warned that patients must be notified of all side effects, as well as being told that the surgery cannot make him/her happy.
This is the first time that the College has attempted to provide guidelines for the cosmetic procedures, and that includes surgery for face lifts as well as Botox and other injectable or laser-based procedures.
There are experts that believe that even these measures do not go far enough.
The guidelines to pre-empt a cosmetic surgery regulation review being used by Sir Bruch Keogh, who is a medical director for the NHS. That investigation was spurred by the PIP breast implant scandal wherein over 50,000 women in Britain were given faulty implants.
These guidelines state that surgeons, and only surgeons, ought to provide cosmetic surgery, while only doctors, dentists, and nurses who have undergone proper training, should be involved in non-surgical procedures.
Normal Williams, a professor and President of the Royal College of Surgeons, stated: We have serious concerns that not all those who offer cosmetic procedures are adequately qualified, or that patients are getting accurate information prior to treatment.
"We hope these standards will feed into the ongoing review of the industry led by the NHS Medical Director, Sir Bruce Keogh, and improve quality of care for patients going forward.” Steve Cannon, who presides as Chairman of the working part and RCS council noted that, “As the majority of cosmetic procedures are not available on the NHS, we must ensure that commercial interests do not compromise patient safety.”
He added: "With the demand for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments rising year on year, it is crucial that the highest level of professionalism is maintained amongst practitioners.”
Still, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons called for even strong restrictions, including the outright ban of advertising that is not in line with prescription medicines.
