(I-TravelNewswire.Com, March 10, 2013 ) Tampa, FL -- A recent study published in the British Medical Journal notes that hitting the links for a round of golfing can provide the kind of benefit also enjoyed by cyclists who take on 100 miles.
The news is clearly great for those who feel a bit bad about not maintaining intensive exercise programs.
The study suggests that intense exercise that goes on for hours does not yield as many health benefits as many believe it might. In fact, the researchers stated that excess exercise such as running for more than 20 miles per week, can cause injury to the body, rather than aide it, over long periods of time. This over-working the body can lead to the initiation of premature aging.
Dr. Ryan Tuscherer of the Cherry Creek Spine and Sport Clinic stated, “You can run five times (a week) 30 minutes each time, that’s a better form of exercise and better on our joints and our muscles.”
The study looked at the mortality records of over 10,000 athletes who competed at the Olympic Games between 1896 to 1936. It found that engaging in extended cycling and rowing had no added survival benefit compared to golf and cricket. Though one has to wonder how using athletes from a time where smoking was considered healthy, and in general is from over 100 years ago could be any indicator of today's health standards.
Researchers also noted that the study is not designed to create a fear of extended workouts and all the doctors noted that it certainly should not be used as a way to avoid exercise.
“That’s a poor attitude. If we’re sitting on our couch, in our chair we’re not exercising, we’re going to have some issues,” Tuchscherer said.
