Visitor Attraction Heightening in Greenland

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, May 18, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Village at the End of the World, a new film about a group of hunters in North West Greenland, catching the eyes of travellers, visitor attraction has significantly increased the traffic to the world’s “last great wilderness”.

While there are plenty of places to see the world, from Siberia to Papua New Guinea, Greenland is becoming increasingly popular. In fact, since 2005, the number of tourists visiting for holidays as doubled. Close to 35,000 people visit Greenland a year.

The Cost of Visiting Greenland

While those numbers may not seem like a lot, visiting Greenland costs a pretty penny. Cox and Kings, a travel company, is offering five different tours this summer. For a single person, one tour can cost upwards of $2,000.

Other companies are offering trips to Greenland as well, but with less itinerary.

With the growing concern of global warming, some may fear their footprints will have a direct impact on the environment and ecosystems in the barren lands of Greenland.

The Environmental and Economic Impact of Visiting Greenland

While ‘Village at the End of the World’, a film about 17-year-old Lars who feels the longing of leaving his struggling village of Niaqornat to explore the world, isn’t necessarily about global warming and environmental issues, it does reflect the hardships that many small communities struggle with, and being a remote village on the edge of the earth, the environment changes have a direct impact on the villagers.

Sarah Gavron, director of the film, says that tourism shouldn’t be avoided. Seeing the wonders of the earth may have an impact on someone’s life to help try to preserve its natural, beautiful state, and even one less carbon footprint makes a difference.

Environmental issues aside, tourism may even help small villages like Naqornat, by giving it the economic boost it needs to keep sustaining. The population of many of the villages are below 100, and if they drop below 50, the government subsidies could cease completely.
