Study Finds Pet Store Puppies Exhibit More Behavioral Problems

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, June 10, 2013 ) New York, NY -- The study, published in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Association indicated that, compared with dogs obtained as puppies from NCBs (non-commercial breeders), dogs obtained as puppies from pet stores had significantly greater aggression toward people, had separation-related problems and urination and defecation problems in the home.

The authors couldn’t determine a specific cause for the puppies’ aggression, but they did mention that puppies from pet stores may be exposed to stressors that aren’t typical in an NCB, including transport-related stress (from the mill to a pet store), confinement to a small area for a long period of time, and limited access to positive human and social interactions.

For stranger-directed aggression, the study lists several possible causes including inadequate socialization, maltreatment by human breeders, and stress that was experienced in utero.

This is just another reason to consider adopting a dog from a shelter, where the animals receive an abundance of good attention from volunteers and staff. They also get more exercise and personalized care than puppies from commercial breeders, making them more used to human interaction.
