The United States DoesnÂ’t Mandate Paid Vacation for Employees

(I-TravelNewswire.Com, June 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to research by the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), almost one in four Americans aren’t given paid time off, while workers in the European Union get at least 20 paid vacation days and Canadians and Japanese get at least ten, American workers are left with whatever the company decides they should get, if it’s any at all.

The CERP report shows that 69 percent of workers at small businesses have paid time off compared with 86 percent of those working at medium and large companies. Less than half, 49 percent of low-income workers have paid vacation time.

Due to the lack of government mandated vacation time, the U.S. has been dubbed the “no vacation nation”. Dan Mitchell argues it’s not such a bad thing. He says that the health of Eurozone companies and their employment records are not substantially profitable.

However, research is divided when it comes to correlating paid time off with productivity levels. In Germany, employers must give their employees six weeks of vacation time off a year, but they are one of the most productive countries in the world. On the other hand, experts argue that if paid time off was so crucial for workers here in America, it would have already been demanded and mandated.

If legislators were to mandate paid time off, states wouldn’t be allowed to set the amount. The mandate would have to be on the federal level so businesses couldn’t move to evade the laws.
