Families find hiking, kayaking, whales, and a field of sweaters on the Olympic Peninsula

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 30, 2010 ) PORT ANGELES, Wash;- Start with a morning in Port Angeles wandering through WebsterÂ’s Woods. This Â“museum without wallsÂ” sits above the city and has many hidden wonders within. Walk the labyrinth or find the field of sweaters dancing along the path. DonÂ’t forget to check high and low or you could miss the spoon, emus, and stilettos in the trees. After a bit of lunch paddle through the afternoon with a Freshwater Bay trip guided by Adventures through Kayaking. On the bay scan the skies for eagles and falcons and watch the water for otters amongst the kelp. Search for sea stars and anemones while floating around the inlets. Once back on shore mom and dad can enjoy a quick sip at Harbinger Winery, which shares a building with Adventures through Kayaking. The following morning trace the coast to Neah Bay and Cape Flattery the westernmost point. Pullover at Seiku Overlook, one of the newly marked stops on the Whale Trail, and enjoy a breakfast picnic while watching for orcas. At Neah Bay pay a small fee to hike through the forest to Cape Flattery and look out at the terrific views of sea caves. Families can learn about local history in town at the Makah Cultural and Research Center. For a long weekend head south to camp on Second Beach and take a ranger-led walk through the Hoh Rainforest. If itÂ’s a shorter visit take a leisurely drive back to Port Angeles; thereÂ’s plenty to see on the way.
