The people of Bar Harbor go even further and celebrate this beauty, and the work it takes to keep the environment safe, throughout the year.
In the summer the townÂ’s annual Independence Day celebrations are aimed at being zero-waste. This means many materials from utensils to shells are collected and composted during and after various events.
The town is very proud of its night skies and has created local legislation regulating night lighting. In early September they also host the annual Acadia Night Sky Festival. This 5-day event showcases the night skies through activities such as night sky photography workshops, side walk telescoping, and star parties at Cadillac Mountain and Seawell. The festival also promotes education and the importance of the night sky as a natural resource and offers ranger-guided hikes and discussion panels with local sponsor Jackson Labs, and an inflatable sky lab.
Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint while visiting Bar Harbor include staying in environmentally-conscious accommodations such as the Graycote Inn and traveling through town on foot or by bike. Bar Harbor is covered in extensive walking and biking trails.
