PolarExplorers guides oldest American, youngest British woman to South Pole

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 26, 2012 ) ANTARCTICA Â– The oldest American to ever reach the South Pole by ski from the coast of Antarctica at Hercules Inlet has returned home to the US following a 56 day, 1160 Kilometer trek to the South Pole led by veteran expedition outfitter PolarExplorers. At the age of 60, Bob Douglass of Salt Lake City became the oldest American to reach the South Pole from the Ice Shelf, guided by Wilmette, IL based PolarExplorers. On the expedition was the youngest British woman to reach the South Pole from the coast, 21 year old Bryony Balen.

The team arrived exhausted but happy at the ceremonial South Pole on Friday January 20, just two days after the 100th anniversary of Robert Falcon ScottÂ’s historic arrival at the South Pole. During the 56 day journey, the team endured some of the harshest conditions on the planet, including temperatures as low as minus 40F, complete white outs, and the notorious katabatic winds of the Antarctic Plateau. Mr. Douglass and Ms. Balen arrived home safely and in good spirits yesterday, just over 2 months after departing for their record breaking expedition.
