Penzance Pirates Are Not The Only Thing Found In This Famous Cornish Town Says Hotel-Cornwall.com

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 21, 2012 ) Cornwell, UK -- While itÂ’s certainly a good comic tale and one we all no doubt know and love from our youth, Gilbert and SullivanÂ’s Penzance Pirates are not all the stunning Cornish town is renowned for.

Actress Thandie Newton was a resident here, as was model Jean Shrimpton and cricketer Jack Richards. It’s interesting to note also, that Penzance was the birthplace of Maria Branwell – the mother of the famous Bronte sisters.

The most westerly major town in beautiful Cornwall, Penzance is around 75 miles west of Plymouth. With a population of 21,168, itÂ’s a relatively small town but no less popular for it.

An area of outstanding natural beauty, Penzance is particularly busy during the summer months. ThereÂ’s lots to keep people entertained, too. Keen fishers will enjoy its ancient fishing villages, while ramblers will be raring to take in some fresh air on a cliff-top walk.

But its beautiful beaches are what ensure people keep coming back; many of the beaches have even received awards. Perfect for families and children, these stunning sandy beaches provide the ideal spot to relax and take in the scenery.

ThereÂ’s excellent water sports facilities, too! Windsurfing and sailing are two of the most popular pastimes and regular championships are held in recognition of the townÂ’s classes of boats.

Visitors are invited to escape the crowds of the town and venture to the nearby moorland. There are well marked footpaths along the cliff tops and many pre-historic sites where settlement sites are just waiting to be discovered.

It was back in 1614 that King James I granted Penzance the status of Borough and Henry VIII granted the right to charge harbour dues.

Today, the bustling holidaymakersÂ’ favourite is home to a wealth of attractions. On the Penzance social calendar since June 1991, for instance, is the Golowan Festival. The Cornish word for the Midsummer celebrations, Golowan takes place from June 23rd to 28th and is centred around the lighting of bonfires and fireworks. Now a major arts and culture festival, Golowan attracts thousands of people to the town each year.

Art fans who find themselves in the area for a day out or long weekend break can head straight to the Newlyn Art Gallery establishment ‘The Exchange’. Having opened in 2007, the venue has quickly become a popular haunt for art buffs.

Fans of all things history will enjoy a stroll around Penlee House, a museum and art gallery known for its paintings by those who attend the Newlyn School.

CornwallÂ’s famous rugby team, the Cornish Pirates (formerly Penzance and Newlyn RFC) hail from Penzance, though the championship side relocated to Truro in 2005 in a bid to reach the Premiership.

Whether a person wants to try somewhere new in Cornwall or revisit an old favourite, the popular fishing town of Penzance is sure to float the boat. For more information, please visit http://www.hotel-cornwall.com/hotels-in-penzance/
