2012 Legacy of the Arts Festival Celebrates Bar Harbor's Historic Art Tradition

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 12, 2012 ) BAR HARBOR, Maine -- June17-24 the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce pays tribute to its artistic heritage during the 14th Annual Legacy of the Arts Festival. This village-wide celebration features artist studio and gallery openings, exhibits and shows, workshops, lectures, historic tours, concerts, and more. Legacy Week highlights include an Art Walk through downtown Bar Harbor, a juried art show, a cooking class at Ambrosia Cooking School, an evening at ImprovAcadia, a plein air painting demonstration, ax throwing demonstrations at The Great Maine Lumberjack Show, and garden tours at the Mira Monte Inn.

The beauty of Bar Harbor was first captured on canvas in the mid-1880s by noted American landscape painters Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. Other artists soon followed and today Bar Harbor inspires artists across genres from musicians and actors to chefs and sculptors.

The sounds of Bar Harbor will be on display as bands and concerts draw big crowds with a variety of music from Jazz and Folk to Indie. Monday thru Thursday at 7 P.M. outdoor concerts will be held on the Village Green with indoor concerts at various venues. Scheduled performers include: Ned Ferm’s Completely Baseless Trio, Bar Harbor Town Band, The Larks and New Relm.

As an added Father’s Day treat on June 17, Flash in the Pans one of the largest community steel drum bands in the United States will perform in Agamont Park. Formed in 1990, the members of FLASH! find as much joy in playing the steel drums as they do in sharing their music with enthusiastic audiences of all ages. During the concert, the festival’s 2012 Acadia Arts Achievement Award recipient will be announced.

Art will be on display around Bar Harbor throughout Legacy week at museums, galleries, studios, lodging establishments, retail shops, and restaurants. Venues include the Abbe Museum, The Kedge, Jesup Memorial Library and Side Street Café.

An Art Walk will be held on Friday, June 22 from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM. This free self-guided tour has stops at local art galleries, art studios, museums, and alternative art venues such as the D’Alessio, Alone Moose and Mason Galleries in downtown Bar Harbor. Maps of the Art Walk will be available online and at participating venues.

For the 62nd year, the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce will host a juried outdoor art show comprised of more than 30 regional artists with original works of art for sale in a multitude of genres. The show will be June 23 from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM and June 24 from 10:00 AM-5:00 PM rain or shine on the Village Green.
